About ISO
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international nongovernmental organization made up of national standards bodies that develops and publishes a wide range of proprietary, industrial, and commercial standards. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was founded in 1947 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition to producing standards, ISO also publishes technical reports, technical specifications, publicly available specifications, technical corrigenda, and guides. The ISO plays an important role in facilitating world trade by providing common standards among different countries. ISO standards cover all fields, from healthcare to technology to manufacturing to security to the environment. However, ISO itself does not provide any certification or accreditation. It assigns separate bodies for this task.HIERARCHY OF CERTIFICATION
IAF
Right on top of the hierarchy of accreditation is the International Accreditation Forum (IAF). The IAF is a global association of conformity assessment accreditation bodies and other bodies that are involved in assessment and certification for standards. The primary aim of this body is to develop a program for conformity in assessment across the globes that consumers can rely upon accredited certificates. Most of the countries in the world are members and signatories of the IAF
ACCREDITATION BOARD
Next comes the accreditation board, which is mainly country-specific. Each country has its own accreditation board. For instance, in India, this board is called the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB). USA has IAS and others, KOREA has KAB etc.
CERTIFICATION BODIES
At the third and last level of the hierarchy are the certification bodies that are responsible for granting certificates of standards to companies and organizations. Such certification bodies need to be members of the respective national accreditation boards. Certification Bodies are responsible for auditing and inspecting the organization being certified.
